These are the ones and zeroes that make up binary code.įor reference, there are 1,000 bits in a single Kilobit (Kb). Speed Test Terms: How To Understand Your Results Bitsīits are foundational units of measurement for digital data. ![]() Streaming multiple TV shows or movies at the same time (especially 4K media) and downloading large files are both examples of activities that require higher download speeds than average. Almost all activities require a certain amount of download speed, so this is the main number you’ll want to pay attention to when deciding how much internet speed you need. ![]() Download Speedĭownload speed refers to how quickly your connection can retrieve data from a website or server online. Some do, however, including Skype and other video chat services, online gaming, and large cloud storage applications like Dropbox and Google Drive. In short, most activities online do not require high upload speeds. This number is often not the one heavily advertised by service providers online, and this is on purpose. Upload speed refers to how quickly your connection can send something (data, in this case) from your device to the wider internet. In order to better understand your internet speed test, it is vital to know the difference between upload speed and download speed. Understanding Your Internet Speed Test Results The speeds advertised by internet providers are based on the speed you get with a device wired directly to the router using an ethernet cable. Keep in mind that using WiFi tends to reduce performance. This will often solve the issue, but not always. If you test your connection multiple times and find that you aren’t getting what you’re paying for, we recommend reaching out to your ISP for help. Running our internet speed test is the best way to determine if your provider is actually holding up their end of the bargain. Then there’s the flipside you may be paying for speeds you’re not actually getting. Based on the information above, if you find that your internet speeds are higher than needed, we’d recommend reaching out to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and switching to a lower-cost plan. You may be paying for more speed than you actually need, and these additional fees could be costing you month after month. For one, it could potentially save you some money. ![]()

With the lighting of the 50-foot-tall (15 m) first official tree two years later, the tree became what Rockefeller Center dubbed "a holiday beacon for New Yorkers and visitors alike". The first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was erected in 1931, during the Depression-era construction of Rockefeller Center, when Italian-American workers decorated a smaller 20 foot (6.1 m) balsam fir with "strings of cranberries, garlands of paper, and even a few tin cans" on Christmas Eve. Above, the workers line up for pay beside the tree, adorned with garlands made by workers' families. History The first tree at Rockefeller Center, erected by construction workers in 1931 shortly after the site was cleared. In total it weighs 900 pounds (408.23 kg). The new star features 70 spikes and three million crystals with LED lighting spots by the company Oznium, who worked with the engineers. A new crystal star of Swarovski crystal which tops the tree was created in 2018 and designed by the renowned architect Daniel Liebeskind. Scaffolding is erected around the tree to assist workers in hanging about 50,000 multi-colored LED lights and the star top. Once at Rockefeller Center, the tree is supported by four guy-wires attached at its midpoint and by a steel spike at its base. Trucks, barges, and a transport plane have all been used to help the tree make the trip. On its way to Manhattan, the tree is often dressed in giant red bows or banners extending holiday greetings to witnesses. The tree is then delivered to the city by a local company, Christmas Tree Brooklyn. Once a tree is selected, a crane supports the tree while it is cut, then moved to a custom telescoping trailer able to transport trees up to 125 feet (38 m) tall, although the narrowness of the streets around Rockefeller Center limits the height of the tree to 100 feet (30 m). Pauzé and his team choose each year's tree based on its heartiness and "Christmas tree shape," as well as its ability to support the heavy ornaments. Trees are also submitted for consideration through Rockefeller Center's website. He visits nurseries throughout the tri-state area and looks for unique backyard trees. Įrik Pauzé, Head Gardener at Rockefeller Center, looks for each year's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Until his death in 2009, the late David Murbach, Manager of the Gardens Division of Rockefeller Center, scouted for the desired tree in upstate New York and surrounding states, and even Ottawa in Ontario, Canada. Trees are traditionally donated to Rockefeller Center, which in turn donates the lumber after display. Selection and decoration A close-up look at the Rockefeller Christmas Tree in 2018 The tree remained on display until 10:00 PM EST on January 13, 2024. The tree, usually a Norway spruce 69 to 100 feet (21–30 m) tall, has been a national tradition each year since 1933. An estimated 125 million people visit the attraction each year. The tree lighting ceremony is aired at the end of every broadcast, following live entertainment and the tree is lit by the current Mayor of New York City, the CEO and president of Tishman Speyer and special guests.
